Dr. Whiting's Inside Track-New! Dangers of YO-YO Dieting

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago I wrote up the statistics of one of your fellow staff people who was taking our CholestEze program to battle very high cholesterol. She recently sent in a progress report and I thought you might like to see the results:

Back in 1995, doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Sports Medicine established that 30 minutes of exercise a day would be ideal for health and fitness. Another study, in 1999, physiologists at the University of Pittsburgh found that this 30 minute time window did indeed produce the best results in managing blood pressure, blood sugar, weight loss and overall body composition. Isn’t it nice to know that our 30 minute fitness and weight loss centers, called Curves, are right once again?

Back in 1995, I predicted that type II diabetes would take over as the leading cause of death in the next twenty years. Well, we’re not yet halfway through that time period and sadly, we are ahead of schedule. Over 3.2 million deaths can be attributed to diabetes each years, according to a new publication, released this week by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the report, “diabetes is a major threat to global public health that is rapidly getting worse and the biggest impact is on adults of working age.”

The report went on further to say, “Type II diabetes, which accounts for over 90 percent of all cases of diabetes, can be prevented through lifestyle intervention alone.”
What do you suppose that intervention is??? The Trinity of Good Health of course!!

Lastly, for this week, another study has just been released illustrating the dangers of yo-yo dieting. At Curves, we have been teaching for years, the dangers of this practice on resting metabolism, but now scientists are finding other, more sinister problems connected with yo-yo dieting.

Researchers studied a group of women, all of whom had dieted for varying lengths of time and number of times, over the past few years. They measured the levels of natural killer cells, immune system cells that aim at viruses and may have a role in preventing cancer as well.

The women who had yo-yoed most often in their lives – five or more times, had the lowest levels of the killer cells; the highest levels were found among women whose weight had been stable for several years.

This tells us that yo-yo dieting seems to have much more serious implications than merely keeping us fat. The good news is that these same women, when put on a healthy dietary program that was right for them, stabilized after a couple of years and the level of natural killer cells began to rise once again to normal levels.

The Curves program proves, once again, to be the best program for women in ever so many ways.
