Dr. Whiting's Inside Track-Alzeimer's and High Cholesterol

There are two new studies, very recently published, that I feel are important:

Omega ?3?s Help Fight Alzheimer's Disease

New research published in the Archives of Neurology Vol. 60, 2003, indicate the omega 3 fatty acids may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer?s disease. Researchers conducted a study from 1993 to 2000, using a random selection of 815 nursing home residents. None of these individuals had the disease at the beginning of the study. Of the 815, 131 developed Alzheimer?s disease during the study period. Researchers found that participants who consumed fish once or twice per week were 60 percent less likely to develop the disease compared with those who rarely or never ate fish. Seafood, especially the fatty fishes, contribute a very high amount of omega 3 and 9 fatty acids to the body. Supplementing with fatty acids is important if your members don't regularly eat seafood.

Macadamia Nuts Lower Cholesterol in Humans

According to a study published in Vol. 133, 2003 of the Journal of Nutrition, macadamia nut consumption may help reduce cholesterol levels in humans. The study involved middle-aged men, all suffering with high cholesterol levels for long periods of time. The subjects were given between 1.5 and 3 ounces of macadamia nuts daily for four weeks. Total cholesterol levels decreased by three percent and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was 5.3 percent lower after just 30 days! Further observations showed that HDL cholesterol ( the good stuff) increased an average of 8 percent in all subjects participating. The significance of this is important to note. We have been told for decades that elevated cholesterol comes form consuming too much fat, especially saturated fat, in the diet. Further, we are always told that in order to reduce cholesterol we must follow a strict low-fat diet. As most of us know, this is nonsense and this study is just one more proof that dieticians with their low-fat and low-calorie starvation diets are wrong. The VERY HIGH fat content of the macadamia nuts helps the liver to regulate cholesterol, which is what it is supposed to do. I can remember one of the first clinical studies to prove that the fat and cholesterol theory was wrong, was conducted at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1975. Healthy subjects were fed two to four eggs per day, in addition to their regular diet. At the end of the study, no significant increase in serum cholesterol was noted. Another test, conducted at the University of Texas in Houston in 1977, took a group of subjects, each with dangerously high levels of cholesterol, and fed them a diet consisting of 18 eggs per day and little else. At the end of the study, ALL subjects had normal cholesterol levels. How is this possible? Firstly, eating cholesterol does not give you elevated cholesterol, a faulty liver function is responsible for elevated lipids. Secondly, the natural lecithin found in eggs, helps to regulate blood fats by its nourishing action upon the liver.
